WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SAND SCULPTING FROM 4. UNTIL 12. JUNE 2018
The World Championship Sand Sculpting 2018 in The Hague, which will be held from 4. June until 12. June, is about to begin. This unique competition, which is held every three years, will be happening for the first time in The Netherlands, at the Lange Voorhout in the historic city centre. The Championship is organised as a cultural event to celebrate 200 years Scheveningen Sea Side Resort.
In total 9 sand sculptures will be created, of which 8 will be participating in the official competition. The Netherlands, as host country, is excluded from the competition, but will represent itself with a sand sculpture as well, by creating a sculpture dedicated to Scheveningen.
PARTICIPATING COUNTRIES & THEME
The 8 participating countries are Japan, Singapore, Russia, Mexico, Ireland, United States, United Kingdom, and Czech Republic. Top artists from these countries will create a sand sculpture by using each 40.000 kg of special sand.
The overall theme is “200 years of sea, sand and….” The professional artists have interpreted this theme in a wide variety of designs, which will result in an extraordinary exhibition of high quality pieces of sand art. The artists have been inspired by Van Gogh, Dali, Picasso, the Dutch Tolerance, New Dimensions in Art and Science, etc.
FREE ADMISSION FROM 4. JUNE UNTIL 19. AUGUST
From 4. June until 12. June, visitors can watch the artists at work from close by, daily between 09.00 and 18.00, and see how sand sculptures are being created step by step. The process of creation is just as interesting and intriguing as the final result and definitely worth a visit.
To make a visit after dark even more worthwhile, the sculptures will be lit in a very artistic way by professional light artists, creating an extra and new dimension to the pieces of art at night time.
The pieces of sand art will be on display -free of charge- until 19. August. On 20. August the sculptures will be taken down, after which the sand will be re-used for building purposes.
ANNOUNCEMENT OF NEW THE WORLD CHAMPION
On the 13th of June the judging will be done by a jury, consisting of professionals from the world of arts and museums. At 15.00 the new World Champion will be announced by the chairperson of the Jury, Mrs. Maya Meijer. At 15.30 the Mayor of The Hague, Mrs. Pauline Krikke will officially open the exhibition.
